Medicare Tip of the Week:

Medicare Tip of the Week: How to Compare Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage to find the right plan for you…

Medicare Supplements can be IDEAL for some while Medicare Advantage plans can be a good DEAL for others.  No single supplement or advantage plan is for everyone.  Firstly, your plan should match your financial situation.  Secondly, it should match your approach to health and finances.  Just to be clear, these are my personal opinions and ratings, not of CMS or any insurer.

Medicare supplements are ideal in that they allow for the maximum flexibility in providers, pay out to claims predictably and allow for individual control of medical expenses.  They have Medicare as first payor, which puts your doctor and Medicare in charge of deciding medical necessity instead of the insurer.  The supplement picks up from there providing the finances to cover many of the gaps that Medicare doesn’t pay.  Separate coverages may also be needed to cover dental, vision, hearing and prescription drugs. If your financial situation is solid and your approach to life and healthcare is frequently cautious, supplements can be ideal.

Medicare Advantage plans are often a good fit for people who like the idea of a single plan that covers several of their needs, has a low premium and caps their out of pocket expenses. They like to keep premiums low while still providing a safety net in case the unforeseeable occurs.  If your financial situation is good, you might save up the equivalent of the maximum out of pocket from the savings you are getting on premiums that would be paid on a supplement plan.  Or you put a small amount to work in a hospital indemnity plan that fills in the largest costs not already fully covered in an advantage plan.  Claims can take longer with MA plans, denials more frequent, so patience may be necessary.  Networks can be strict or loose, HMO or PPO, which is why it is good to have an agent review the plan you are considering to make sure your doctors, pharmacies and prescriptions are compatible with your choice.  Than being said, if chosen correctly, Medicare Advantage can be really good deal.

Whether your plan is ideal or just a really good deal, we can help you find a plan that is uniquely yours.
